The alley was still the same: bluestone slabs slippery with spring rain, wooden lattice windows propped up with bamboo poles, neighbors yelling across the lane. But a red demolition notice was pasted at the entrance, saying the whole back lane would be renovated into a commercial district. Aunt Zhou next door handed her a bowl of hot noodles and sighed, saying everyone had been arguing for half a month. Lin Wan pushed open the creaky door of the snack shop, and the smell of old oil and chili rushed over her. Under the counter, she found a dented iron box that grandma had always kept locked.
